Loan Policies
Borrowing Privileges
Students, faculty, staff, and alumni of St. Peter's Seminary, The University of Western Ontario, Huron, Brescia, and King's University Colleges may borrow library material. Other individuals engaged in legitimate research may apply for guest borrowing privileges.
Regular Loan Periods:
Students, Faculty, Staff 120 days
Alumni/Guest Borrowers 28 days
Direct Borrowers 28 days
Reciprocal Faculty Borrowers 28 days)
Recalled Loans:
Any item on regular loan may be recalled. Borrowers with full borrowing privileges may recall such items. The original borrower is assured of at least seven days use of the requested item before it must be returned. Recalls are placed by clicking on the Request Item button in the Library Catalogue, or in person at the library Service Desk. Recalled material must be returned by the date specified on the recall notice.
Fines for Recalled Loans
$4.00 per day/ max $56.00
Avoid fines by returning items on time or by renewing them by the due date.
Renewal of Loans:
Regular or extended loan items may be renewed unless they have been recalled or reserved for another patron,
Shortened Loan Periods:
Material in high demand may be placed on short loan status (Reserve).
Fines Threshold:
Suspension of library borrowing privileges occurs when a borrower accumulates more than $20.00 in fines.
Borrowers may pay down their overdue fines to the $20.00 threshold or below to reinstate their borrowing privileges.
The maximum overdue fine for any one A.P. Mahoney Library item is $56.00.
Return of materials cancels replacement costs leaving the $25.00 administrative charge.
Lost Item Charges:
Items are declared lost if they are more than 30 days overdue.
$125 default replacement charge 100% refundable up to one year after payment
$25 administration charge Non-refundable
Users:
The A.P. Mahoney Library is open to the general public. A valid University identification card or Guest Borrower card is required to borrow materials.
Individuals without a valid borrower card may use most materials in the library and may consult library staff for assistance in accessing collections and most services.
Return Procedures:
Regular loan and Recalled material can be returned to any of the Western Libraries or the Affiliate University College Libraries (Brescia, Huron, King's) & St. Peter's Seminary.
NOTE: Short loan material must be returned to its home library by the date specified.
Non-Circulating Material:
There are materials in the library that do not circulate. Some non-circulating materials may be circulated for a limited period at the discretion of the library staff. These materials will be subject to overdue fines as noted elsewhere.

Lost or Damaged Books & Academic Sanctions
Damage to, or loss of, Library materials should be reported promptly. A replacement cost and supplementary processing fee apply in addition to accumulated fines, if the item is also overdue. Failure to pay fines or charges relating to lost or damaged Library materials, or failure to comply with Library regulations, may result in the application of sanctions. The College and/or University are empowered
- not to issue a Grade Report
- not to issue a Permit to Register
- not to issue a transcript or degree diploma
- not to permit further registration
until such time as said indebtedness to the College and/or University is discharged. Non-receipt of notices by a borrower does not relieve him/her from any of the aforementioned fines, fees or suspension of privileges. Changes of address/telephone number should be reported promptly to The Office of the Registrar.
Privacy
In compliance with the Personal Information Protection & Electronic Documents Act ( PIPEDA ) and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), it is Library policy that names of users, their personal data, and identification of items signed out to them or requested by them are not released, except as may be required for the application of the sanctions and penalties specified above. Comportment
Registration in the University and its affiliated university colleges includes the right to use library materials and services in compliance with established regulations. Although lidded beverages are permitted, smoking and the consumption of food are not. Cell phones should be used outside of the library. Patrons engaging in loud conversation and or antisocial behaviour will be asked to desist or leave. It is an indictable offence to steal or wilfully fail to return library material or mutilate or deface books, equipment or furniture. Patrons with outstanding fines are unable to borrow until the fine is paid.
